After Roof Crafters gives away new roof, Mid-city homeowner Yolanda White was delighted to hear her leaking roof would get fixed when a team of volunteers from Tulsa, Ok. came to town. Then the news got better.

The project at White’s house changed when Vaughn, an Owens-Corning Platinum Contractor, contacted Magee, another Platinum Preferred installer with Owens Corning, to see if Magee had a “backup crew” available in case inclement weather or other difficulties forced the Tulsa team to return home before the project was complete. Being community minded Roof Crafters gives away new roof by providing all the labor to install the roofing system.

“[Magee] said, ‘Hey, I’ve got a crew that will do the whole thing,’” Vaughn said. Materials were donated by ABC Supply, a nationwide supplier.

White’s one-story home was elevated after the storm, but the roof was not replaced at the time. White has lived in the 50-year old house for 15 years.

Team coordinator Dr. Amy Emerson said the team wanted to help White because she gives so much to others.

“She is an incredible lady who uses her vacation time each year to cook two hot meals for children in the Hollygrove neighborhood, who attend a week-long summer camp,” Emerson said. “It’s fun to see all kinds of people come together to do this project.”

Other activities held in conjunction with the team’s visit included a “Pete the Cat” literacy event, based on the popular children’s series books by Eric Litwin. Free books were provided for children that attended. The churches are co-led by ministers Charles Marsalis and Kirk Garrison.

While the long-standing partnership with the Oklahoma team has made them “family,” White said the focus of the week was on the children and not the adults workers. “Even though it’s just for a few days, the children are getting something they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.”

Entrepreneur Goes From Living in His Truck, To Making a Deal in ‘The Den’

 Entrepreneur Anthony Jones successfully closed a deal with two Dragon’s Den investors on the November 20, 2013 airing of the show. Jones, thrilled at the outcome, explains how he lived out of his half-ton truck when he first started, to build the business literally from the ground up.

“I remember waking up from the sound of the engine running in my half-ton truck at 5am after a night of sleeping in the back seat. I would park every evening at the local truck stop and I would prepare the back seat with the two “large doggy pillows” that I had scrambled for the cash to purchase, (my reason for the doggy pillows was that they are packed with hay and insulation so not to create dampness and humidity,) lay down my sleeping bag, put on my sweatpants, hooded sweater, 2 layers of socks, turn up the radio and fall asleep. When I woke up, I would climb into the front seat and drive to the local YMCA, use the facilities, shower, gym and bathroom – I would get cleaned up and would head off to work. I would buy food that didn’t have a shelf life and would only eat when I needed because I was more worried about having enough money to purchase fuel to stay warm…that was my priority. After a long day’s work I would repeat the same routine.”

Jones is no stranger to business, in fact, prior to starting “Hunky Haulers” he successfully ran a commercial sub-contracting construction company at the age of 19, with $600 to his name. By the time he was 29, they were up to $20 million in labor contracts ($300 million in labor and supply signed contracts to fulfill.) As a result, Jones moved his operations outside of Canada and set up his business in the United States. Unfortunately, in the fall of 2008 when the recession hit, Anthony had to liquidate this business in order to ensure he could make payroll due to uncollectable receivables. By January of 2009, he had to lay off over 200 union men and women employees and start from scratch.

“When I lost my business in 2009 after the recession – I remember thinking, now what? Now it’s going to get hard, what do I do? I started Hunky Haulers in March of 2011 based on an idea to be in a business that would allow me the opportunity to serve the community and give back, I wanted to create something that changed the way people looked at the service industry – the way the service industry looked at the community and the way we empowered businesses, people, churches, charities, ideas, sports programs – around us” said Anthony Jones, CEO of Hunky Haulers. “When I received the email from the producers of CBC’s hit show – Dragons Den, I immediately was excited but was nervous and scared because I didn’t know how I could afford to get there –I mustered up the courage, the little money I had and started driving, didn’t look back and the rest is history. Black Friday: Is Thanksgiving Thursday 8pm Becoming The New Black Friday Midnight?

Black Friday is that time of the year in the US shopping calendar after Thanksgiving that sees thousands of shoppers flock retail outlets to take advantage of massive discounts that are offered for many items on sale. Its said Black Friday is the weekend that begins the Christmas shopping season in America.

Retails stores traditionally opened their doors on Friday after Thanksgiving but it seems with tough economic times and the pressure to increase sales, there has been a shift and more retail stores are beginning to open up their stores on Thanksgiving Thursday at around 8pm.

On October 14th Macy’s sent out a press release announcing that they will be opening up their nationwide stores at 8 p.m on Thanksgiving evening for the first time. The Cincinnati-based chain said they did this in response to interest from customers who prefer to start their shopping early.

Kohl’s Department Stores that operates 1,158 stores across the country announced on Monday 21st that their stores will be open for 28 hours straight – from 8 p.m Thursday, November 28 through midnight Friday nationwide.

J.C. Penney has also not been left behind among the big retailers opening business on Thanksgiving. They are doing so for the first time this year. Last year, companies that opened up on Thanksgiving night included Sears, Target, Toys R Us, Kmart and Walmart.

What have been the customer reactions to these changes? A visit to some of the retailers Facebook pages revealed interesting insights on what people thought Patti Simoes Burgess said, “I don’t like that they are going to make their employees work on Thanksgiving. Macy’s used to be my favorite store to go to for Black Friday when I lived in NY. Now I wouldn’t even consider shopping at one because of that. I boycott all stores on Thanksgiving that are open. Workers have a right to be with their families.”

Andrea Lindsey supported JCPenney’s move and said, “It is necessary, because at least in my area almost everyone else is doing the same thing, and in the retail world you have to be competitive.”

Greta Foose strongly disagreed with Kohl’s opening date saying, “The Stores have already commercialized the holidays enough without being open on Thanksgiving day. I will not be shopping with you.”

According to National Retail Federation, consumers will take a conservative approach to spending this holiday season. According to NRF’s holiday consumer spending survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, the average holiday shopper will spend $737.95 on gifts, décor, greeting cards and more, two percent less than the $752.24 they actually spent last year.

So, what next?

Decide between yourselves do you like modern or classic, a sit down meal or buffet, indoors or out, flamboyant or quaint. From this you will have an idea of key things to look for in a venue. Seating your loved ones

Some of the more interesting experiences you may have to contend with are the wonders of family politics which leads swiftly onto where to seat everyone. It may take you several attempts to work out how this is going to please all your guests, resulting in some people being sat outside, however the most important thing to remember is this is your day! Try not to let guests dictate to you who they want to sit with and do not be afraid to put guests where YOU want them to be. I can assure you that a lost speech will send his stress levels over the top!

Can I book the Weather?

So, you have a beautiful venue, an array of gorgeous decorations and the finest food and drink. You have booked a top Photographer, Videographer, musician and classic car……there’s only one thing that could possibly trouble you now. The Great British Weather! Unfortunately there’s very little that can be said for this as it’s as unpredictable as a two year old in the “speak now or forever hold your peace” part of the ceremony, however you can certainly make the best of it and prepare for any weather. Some say there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather, Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up and snow is exhilarating. Just don’t pin your hopes on radiant sunshine, instead factor in cute wraps for your Bridesmaids, comical wellies and umbrella’s for you and your groom, maybe even a rubber duck to add to the photo’s! The more humour that you can bring to your day, the more you will relax and remember it for all the right reasons. I have met many a Bride that knows their local weather station worker on first name terms after calling every day for a month in the run up to their wedding and it really cannot change the weather on the day! You may also wish to discuss with your venue what they can do in the event of bad weather and where guests would go if they cannot get outside. After all they must have had a rainy day before now!

Gift giving etiquette

Arguable one of the more fun sides to your wedding planning is deciding what gifts to ask for on your big day. If you and your hubby-to-be have already set up house together, another toaster, sandwich maker or George Foreman Grill may not be so warmly received. It has been highly recommended to me to set aside a day to take a trip around your local John Lewis scanning favourable items and creating a desirable wedding list to put in your invites, after all it’s not often we feel a tagine or nest of coffee tables is an important and necessary purchase.
